Why blinking is important

An average person blinks 15 to 20 times in a minute which is enhanced by contraction and relaxation of the eye muscles.

Every time you blink, you service your eyeballs and enhance better vision.

Here are three reasons why blinking is vital;

1.Cleansing of eye cornea

Blinking not only squeezes the glands to produce fluids but also helps spread tears across the eye cornea and remove irritants such as dirt on the eye surface.This actually sharpens the vision whereas reduced blinking decreases clarity of vision.

2.Blinking enhances lubrication of the eye

When you blink your eyes, tears and a lubricant are secreted which enhances movement of the eye in its socket. The eyelid provides suction from the tear duct which prevents the eye from drying out.

3.Blinking also serves as a mental break

Blinking disengages our tension during work. Scientists have proven that every time we blink, we give our brain a break which enhances our thinking capability. Hence the speed at which we blink increases when one is fatigued.

Focusing on one object for a long period of time for example when reading or using electronic gadgets significantly reduces the number of times we blink.  Not blinking enough can lead to squinting and consequently, eye damage.

To avoid eye damage, the 20-20-20 rule should be applied. It states that after every 20 minutes spent looking at a screen, you should spend at least 20 seconds looking 20 feet away.
