The Inspector General of Police Martin Okoth Ochola has dismissed a Police Constable from the police force over alcoholism and violence.
Ochola, last week ordered the Police Court chaired by Senior Commissioner Charles Birungi to swiftly try Constable Nathan Kanyesige who featured in a video clip very drunk and tearing documents at his workstation in Butambala District.
Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga says that the Police Court charged Kanyesige with irregular conduct contrary to provisions of the Police Act. Kanyesige was found guilty, convicted and dismissed from the police force.
Enanga says Kanyesige’s conduct was out of order and tainted police image.
Enanga said Ochola has since warned all officers against engaging in acts that contravene the conduct of the institution they serve. The police chief said all officers who will exhibit manners similar to Kanyesige’s will be shown the exit.
The Police Court under the stewardship of retired Senior Commissioner Dennis Odongpiny, suspended, demoted, expelled and severely reprimanded more than 500 police officers in the last three years. These range from the rank of Constable to Senior Superintendent of Police.
In December last year, the Police Disciplinary Tribunal convicted eight police officers accused of negligence in connection to the kidnap and murder of social worker, Maria Nagirinya and her driver, Ronald Kitayimbwa.
Seven out of eight police officers arrested on President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s order were found guilty of negligence of duty while the other officer was found guilty of discreditable conduct that tainted the police image.
The officers who were Odongpiny’s last defaulters as court chairman include Assistant Superintendent of Police Muhammad Byansi, the Officer in Charge of Nateete Police Station Andrew Nizeyimana, ASP Allan Okello, Detective Assistant Inspector of Police Sunday Baguma, Corporal Samuel Owona, Police Constable Joshua Basaliza and PC Deo Kitute.
