Flying Squad Impounds Stolen Vehicles in Jinja

A team of police officers attached to flying squad unit have stormed Anama motor garage located in Jinja town where they impounded two vehicles which were allegedly stolen from Kampala.

The vehicles impounded comprise of a Prado TX, registration number; UAS 188Z, and a saloon car of G-touring series whose number plate had been plucked off.

Officers who were beefed by detectives also attempted to impound another saloon car of Premio series, but it was sneaked out by a mechanic whose names are not yet identified.

They later arrested two mechanics, namely; Farouq Duulu and another only identified as Adam on grounds of aimed crime by rebranding stolen vehicles.

A police officer who spoke on condition of anonymity says the suspects were trailed for the past eight days after being linked to a Toyota wish that was stolen in January 2020, but cited around the same garage on Monday last week. “We are carrying out investigations about a Toyota wish that was stolen early this year,” he says.

He says Muduulo is known for rebranding stolen vehicles.

Kiira region’s police spokesperson, Diana Nandawula confirms the incident adding that the suspects are still at large. She adds that the garage was condoned off pending police inquiries.

Meanwhile mechanics led by their chairperson, Ashiraf Kiyaga claim that the said vehicles are ferried in by customers from different parts of the country. Kiyaga further says that most of the rebranded vehicles are ferried in by a car dealer Michael Mugaga.

Samson Mulanga, a mechanic says that there is a lot of competition within their industry due to the increasing number of unemployed youth thronging the garages on a daily basis therefore.

Majid Sonko, another mechanic says that police should focus on hunting for the thieves themselves rather than trailing mechanics who are just employed to refurbish the vehicles without prior knowledge on the crime committed.
