Lwengo Vice Chairperson, Councillors Clash Over Proposed Auction

The method of disposing off obsolete assets belonging to Lwengo district has triggered a disagreement between the LC V Vice Chairperson and councilors.

In December 2019, the Lwengo district council resolved to auction all vehicles, motorcycles and office equipment that is no longer in use. Councilors accordingly tasked the Chief Administrative Officer to generate an inventory of all unutilised assets for eventual auctioning.

Christopher Ssensasire, the Lwengo LC V Vice Chairperson indicates that the District Executive Committee resolved to auction each of the items wherever it is, which hasn’t gone down well with the councilors.

On Friday, councilors resolved in a council session by the speaker, Alice Nakayondo that all items earmarked for auctioning first be assembled at the district headquarters to enable them ascertain their current condition.

Sarah Nakanwagi, the Lwengo Town Council female councilor noted that they need to look at all the assets such that they can collectively harmonise positions on the price to avoid mistrust.

She demands that council sets up a committee that will liaise with the Chief Administrative Officer to conduct prior inspection of the assets for purposes of ensuring accountability.

Vincent Birimuye, the Youth Representative blamed the District Executive Committee for trying to undermine the integrity of councilors by plotting to auction the assets secretly.

He implored councilors to reject the alternative proposal of nominating two representatives to join the executive committee to determine the prices of the assets, saying there is need for collective action.

In his submission to council, the LC V Vice Chairperson, Christopher Ssensalire, said some of many of the assets especially vehicles are in very poor shape to be towed.

Ssensasire accused a section of councilors for conspiring against all positions of the District Executive Committee by hiding behind procedures that have no meaning.

The disagreements prompted the speaker to suspend the sitting and instructed both parties to go back and harmonise positions on the matter.
