Man Arrested for Making Fake Sanitizers

Police have arrested a man for allegedly making counterfeit sanitizers and disinfectants. 

Stephen Kanaiti was on Thursday arrested from Nsambya Central Zone, Makindye Division, in Kampala mixing alcohol like content and water to sell to unsuspecting members of the public. 

Patrick Onyango, the Kampala police spokesperson, said Katwe police received information from concerned members of the public that Kanaiti was making fake sanitizers to sell to unsuspecting people.

Superintendent of Police –SP David Epedu, also Katwe police division commander, proceeded to the scene accompanied by detectives and scene of crime officers. The police team conducted a search where several items were recovered.

Epedu alerted National Drug Authority –NDA and Uganda National Bureau of Standards –UNBS to help in investigating the shops that Kanaiti had already been supplied with fake sanitizers to the sell to the public.

Onyango said the suspect who is currently detained at Katwe police division is facing charges of dealing in counterfeit products. Police have since warned members of the public to be on the lookout for counterfeit sanitizers.

Kanaiti is his statement said he overheard the ministry urging people to use sanitizers yet traders were saying they were scared. To him, that was the opportunity to make money by selling counterfeit sanitizers.

Museveni issued the 14 directives that include temporary closure of education institutions, suspension of all religious, political, wedding and cultural gatherings. Other restrictions include’ banning discos, bars, music shows and concerts.

“Wash your hands with soap so that you remove the virus on your hands so that you do not contaminate the surfaces.  Then, on the defensive side, make it a habit never to casually touch your mouth, your nose or your eyes with unwashed hands, in case you touched contaminated surfaces,” Museveni said.

Nevertheless, health minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng asked members of the public to be careful with fake sanitizers that could grace the market. Costs for sanitizers have since skyrocketed making it unaffordable.
