Kalerwe market vendors have resorted to operating on the roadside of Gayaza Road following the closure of their market.
Last week, the Minister for Kampala Affairs Betty Amongi closed the markets after management failed to meet requirements set by the government to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus.
The market was supposed to have hand washing facilities at all entrances for vendors and customers to wash hands and also maintain space of four meters.
Mumbejja Nalwadda a resident of Kanyanya selling eggplants says that when the market was abruptly closed they decided to pick their merchandise and resorted to selling from the roadside.
She, however, says that they operate in fear of Kampala Capital City Authority-KCCA law Enforcement team who confiscate their goods.
Nalwadda says she can’t sit at home because she has a family to sustain. She hopes that KCCA will re-open the market.
Majid Mubiru says that after the market was closed he decided to start hawking fruits on a wheelbarrow and hawks them in areas of Kalerwe, Kyebando and Kanyanya among others.
Saidi Waiswa, the Chairman Freedom Market says they want to observe the 4-meter distance recommended by government and are cleaning the market to free it of garbage.
Badru Kateregge the Chairman Muluya Market says they are finalizing with
reorganizing the market. Since Saturday, they have been cleaning the market and
re-arranging stalls to create the four-meter social distance between vendors.
