Businessman Abid Alam, Four Police Officers Remanded to Kitalya Prison

Businessman Abid Alam has been remanded to Kitalya Prison on charges of conspiracy to defeat the course of Justice.

Alam was remanded together with four police officers attached to Wamala Region police headquarters. They are Wilber Osteen Wanyama, Peter Muhanuzi Baitara, Daniel Robert Ogwellan and Wilson Azale.

They appeared before Buganda Road Grade One Magistrate Joan Acaa Ketty.

The prosecution alleges that on April 8th 2020 between Mityana Regional Police Office and Ntinda in Kampala District the officers conspired with Abid Alam to defeat the course of justice by unlawfully releasing to him confidential information regarding a case file against him yet he was the prime suspect.

The police officers who appeared first in court as the State reportedly hunted for Abid Alam who had skipped police bond pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Minutes later, Alam was also brought to court but also denied the charges and was subsequently remanded because he did not have sureties.

The group which arrested by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit led by Lt Col Edith Nakalema.

Trouble for them started when the Unit received reports that Abid Alam’s agents had been involved in several atrocities like attempted murder and unlawful destruction of property in Bukoba, Kassanda District.

The agents reportedly injured several employees of Major Arthur Mugyenyi before destroying he says his three acres of banana plantations,  two houses as well as killing animals and fleeing with several of them.
