Lawyers Launch Fund to Help Colleagues Affected by Lockdown

A section of lawyers has launched an emergency fund to help their colleagues affected by the covid-19 lockdown.

Assumpta Kemigisha Ssebunya, the Chairperson of the Goodwill committee says that they have noted that the lockdown has affected many lawyers.

“We have formed a good will committee that understands to look within ourselves and be each other’s keeper to see that those with money, time, and gifts as well as the courage can support this initiative,” says Kemigisha in a statement.

Lawyers note that although government started distribution of essential items to the persons affected by the lockdown, many of their colleagues have been excluded.

Isaac Ssemakadde, a lawyer says the cash donation will be centralized to the phone numbers belonging to the Chairperson of the committee.

Ssemakadde says that each beneficiary will be entitled to not more than 500,000 shillings.

“The Committee will decide how much to avail to each person, bearing in mind the size of the trust fund, the cost of living in the respective regions and the principles of equity, equality and non-discrimination. Recipients should take a screenshot of the mobile money message acknowledging receipt of funds “, reads the statement.

According to Ssemakadde, to access fund, the lawyers must be members of Uganda Law Society-ULS.

Last week, City lawyer Brian Bakampa was arrested and held at Central Police Station in Kampala for begging food from President Yoweri Museveni.

Bakampa walked to State House in Nakasero but was denied entrance by Special Forces Command who advised him to go to the Office of the Prime Minister, where he was arrested from.
