COVID-19 CRISIS: Kadaga orders govt to provide sanitary pads in quarantine centers

The Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga has directed the Ministry of Health to provide sanitary facilities including sanitary pads to all the women in quarantine centres to enable them live hygienic lives.

The Speaker’s directive was in response to a complaint raised by Jacqueline Amongin, the Ngora Woman MP who told the House that some of the women trapped in quarantine centers for monitoring on complained about absence of sanitary pads in the facilities, and calls to the authorities to avail the items have been ignored.

Amongin said, “I received the complaint that whereas these women are in quarantine centers, they provide mattresses and beddings where they sleep, but when they raise issues in regards their menstrual cycle, no one wants to attend to them yet they spend over 14days in the isolation center.”

She added, “Tomorrow is International Menstrual Hygiene Day, I would like to pray, on behalf of all women in quarantine centers and us who represent them are here we are menstruators and among items provided in the quarantine centers, could the Ministry of Health make it mandatory and wrote to Local Governments that menstrual pads should be an essential item to be provided in the quarantine centers because you can’t postpone menstruation.”

In response, the Speaker said, “I now direct the Ministry of Health to ensure that all quarantine centers in the country are equipped with the necessary menstrual to enable people living there to live a Hygienic life.”
