Uganda’s Express FC has today defeated Malawi’s Nyasa Big Bullets to win the CECAFA Kagame Cup in a final played at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.
Forward Martin Kizza’s goal was enough to help the Red Eagles to sail past the Malawians to win the trophy.
In a game that was blessed by presence of FUFA President Moses Hassim Magogo, the Red Eagles got their goal earlier in the 22nd minute through Kizza after a neat cross by Eric Kambale.
Nyasa Red Bullets had several attempts through Bright Munthali, but failed to break the Expresss FC defending line.
To reach the final Express FC saw off KMKM SC from Zanzibar 2-1, while Nyasa Big Bullets stopped Azam FC 4-2 in penalties after a 2-2 draw.
We were lacking match fitness because we had spent over a month and two weeks without training. But we came here and the players were listening and improving in every game and this has helped us win,” said Express FC coach Wasswa Bbosa.
Goal scorer Kizza said he is happy to win the championship, and thanked the fans for the support.
The tournament sponsored by Azam TV and the cash prize by Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame will see the winner pocket Shs105 million (US$30000), while the runners up takes Shs70 million (US$20000), and the third placed team Shs35 million (US$10000).
FUFA earlier also promised to reward Express FC with US25,000 incase they lifted the regional trophy.
