The Member of Parliament for Buyaga East Constituency, Stephen Twesige Rulekere, has pledged to advocate for the renovation and improvement of Kagadi General Hospital as part of efforts to enhance healthcare service delivery in the district.
The commitment was made on Wednesday following a meeting with hospital administrators, district leaders, and other stakeholders during a monitoring and benchmarking visit to the facility.
Rulekere said the visit is part of a wider engagement with local government leaders, technical staff, and civil servants aimed at identifying challenges affecting service delivery across Buyaga East Constituency.
He noted that Kagadi General Hospital requires urgent infrastructure upgrades, pointing out that most of its buildings were constructed many years ago and are now outdated.
“I will engage the Ministry of Health and other relevant government agencies to ensure that Kagadi General Hospital is considered for infrastructure development projects that can improve healthcare services for our people,” Rulekere said.
The legislator also highlighted key challenges facing the facility, including understaffing, inadequate accommodation for health workers, and deteriorating staff quarters. He emphasized the need for joint efforts from all stakeholders to strengthen the health sector and improve patient care.
Kagadi Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Karoline Nanshemeza, commended the MP for prioritizing healthcare and other services that directly benefit residents. She urged him to continue working closely with district leaders and to support efforts aimed at eliminating extortion and other forms of misconduct within the health sector.
During the meeting, stakeholders were informed that Kagadi General Hospital receives approximately UGX 1.015 billion in funding, with more than half of the allocation directed to the National Medical Stores for medicines and essential supplies.
The facility is expected to receive about UGX 700 million every quarter, supplemented by locally generated revenue to support operations.
Hospital Administrator Simon Peter said that while development partners, including Baylor Uganda, continue to support government efforts at the facility, the hospital faces significant space constraints due to the large population it serves.
He also called on health workers to maintain professionalism and avoid engaging in extortion, stressing the importance of providing quality and ethical healthcare services to patients.
Rulekere said the findings from the visit will guide his efforts to lobby for resources and interventions needed to improve public services throughout his 2026–2031 parliamentary term.
