Mubende:
Works and Transport Minister Fred Byamukama has commended the contractor of the Mityana–Mubende Road project for improving the pace of construction, three weeks after he criticized the slow progress during an earlier inspection.
Byamukama first visited the 86-kilometre road project on June 12, where he expressed concern over delays by Serbian contractor EnergoProjekt Contractors and challenged the company to speed up the works.
During his latest inspection on Friday , the minister said he was encouraged by the progress made since his previous visit, noting that the contractor had deployed more effort to accelerate construction.
“I am pleased to see that the contractor has responded positively to our concerns. There is visible improvement in the pace of work, and we will continue monitoring the project closely to ensure it is completed and that Ugandans get value for money,” Byamukama said.
The Mityana–Mubende Road project has experienced significant delays. After five years of construction, only 36 kilometres had been completed, prompting concern from both the government and road users.
The road was initially scheduled for completion in 2024, but the contractor failed to meet the deadline and was granted a three-year extension by the Ministry of Works and Transport. The contractor has since requested more time, pushing the expected completion date to 2028.
Byamukama warned that the government would continue to closely supervise the project to ensure the revised timelines are met.
The minister also pledged to crack down on corruption within the road sector, saying dishonest government officials have contributed to delays and poor implementation of public infrastructure projects.
“Corruption has been one of the biggest obstacles to timely completion of government projects. We are determined to hold accountable any public officials whose actions delay service delivery and deny Ugandans quality infrastructure,” he said.
