Police in Kakumiro District are investigating the murder of a 28-year-old businesswoman who was attacked and killed by unknown assailants during a suspected robbery in the early hours of Monday.

The deceased has been identified as Juliet Mbabazi, a businesswoman and resident of East Cell in Kakumiro Town Council.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Mbabazi had stepped out of her business premises to answer nature’s call when two men armed with machetes reportedly emerged from a nearby bush, attacked her, and repeatedly stabbed her in the neck. She died instantly.

The attackers allegedly robbed her of an unspecified amount of money before fleeing the scene. John Kaliisa Kayongo, the area’s Defence Secretary, said although the victim raised an alarm during the attack, residents arrived too late to save her.

Pascal Sentayi, a resident, appealed to police to expedite investigations and ensure those responsible are arrested and brought to justice.

Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed that one suspect has been arrested to assist with investigations. Hakiza said the suspect, whose identity has been withheld to avoid jeopardising ongoing investigations, was arrested on Monday afternoon with the help of a police sniffer dog.

He added that police transported the body to Kakumiro Health Centre IV Mortuary for a postmortem examination before releasing it to the family for burial.

According to Hakiza, the postmortem report showed that Mbabazi died from excessive bleeding resulting from the injuries inflicted by her attackers.
