Police in Kakumiro District have arrested and detained a 27-year-old man for allegedly deceiving his father that his child had died and demanding money for transporting the body to Kakumiro district.
Julius Allan Hakiza, the Albertine South region police spokesperson identified the suspect as Nicholas Mutegeki, a resident of Bugambe parish in Kikuube District.
According to Hakiza, Mutegeki called his father on 15th of this month telling him that his child had died and that he needed Shs350, 000 to transport the body from Kikuube to Kakumiro for burial.
Hakiza expressed that residents became suspicious and intercepted him upon checking, he was found carrying banana suckers packed in a box which he was claiming was the body of his child and angry residents beat Mutegeki before police intervened and rescued him.
Hakiza says Mutegeki is currently detained at Kakumiro Central Police Station and is being charged with public nuisance.
Hakiza warned the public against acts of deception and taking the law into their own hands saying such matters should be reported to police for proper handling.
Hakiza cautioned youths to take up productive work instead of engaging in criminal schemes like staging their on kidnaps and asking for ransom from their parents and deceiving parents for money.
He urged parents to also be vigilant and report suspicious demands to police for verification before giving out money.
