Police in Kakumiro District have launched investigations into the killing of a 50-year-old woman who was allegedly stabbed to death by her husband following a domestic dispute reportedly linked to political differences during the LC1 elections conducted on Tuesday.
The deceased has been identified as Birungi Evelyne, 50, a resident of Kirisa Village in Kakindo Sub-county, Kakumiro District. The suspect, Mukwaya Alikanjeru, 60, a retired primary school teacher who previously taught at Kirisa Primary School, is on the run.
According to Vincent Byabagambi, the Vice Chairperson of Kirisa Village, the couple had been divided over support for rival LC1 chairperson candidates.
Mukwaya reportedly supported the NRM flag bearer, Musasizi Immaculate, while his wife backed independent candidate Serunkuuma Emmanuel.
Byabagambi said the disagreement intensified on Tuesday when Mukwaya allegedly stopped his wife from leaving home to participate in the LC1 elections, insisting that she should not support the independent candidate.
A confrontation reportedly followed, during which Birungi was allegedly stabbed to death.
Results from the election later showed that Musasizi Immaculate, the NRM flag bearer, won the LC1 chairperson race in Kirisa Village.
The LC3 Chairperson of Kakindo Sub-county, Michael Yombo, condemned the incident and urged residents to avoid political violence, saying elections should never cost lives.
“Politics is not a do-or-die activity. People should respect each other’s political choices and resolve disagreements peacefully,” Yombo said.
By press time, officers from Kakumiro Central Police Station had arrived at the scene to begin investigations and transport the body for a postmortem examination. Police had also launched a manhunt for Mukwaya Alikanjeru, who reportedly fled the area immediately after the incident.
Police are expected to issue an official statement as investigations continue.
