Police have arrested eight people over allegations of masterminding road protests in Jinja town.
The suspects were arrested after a series of protests in Jinja town where residents of Mpumudde-Kimaka division last week took to the streets to show dissatisfaction over the poor state of roads within their area.
The suspects were arrested after allegedly blocking traffic within Bugembe town council.
They are reported to have set ablaze garbage heaps along the three roads of Katende, Nakanyonyi and Bukwale.
Henry Bukenya, a resident from Nakanyonyi village earlier says that authorities were reluctant to repair the dilapidated roads and peaceful protests are aimed at giving them a wakeup call to fulfil their responsibilities to their electorates.
Ahmed Natumu, the officer in- charge of operations at the Jinja central police division says that police officers tasked the suspects to officially address their grievances to the responsible in vain.
Natumu adds that the suspects organized an illegal assembly and will be prosecuted before the courts of the law.
John Guloba, the town clerk of Bugembe town council says that most of the roads have been destroyed by the frequent heavy rainfall patterns and they lack funds to refurbish them at the same time.
