Kagadi-Kagadi district councilors on Wednesday afternoon declaimed to attend a council meeting protesting the non-payment of their sitting allowances.
53 out of 64 councilors shunned the council session at Kagadi community hall.
Richard Namanya, the workers representative and one of the defiant councilors who are demanding for sitting allowances for three quarters have vowed to boycott future meetings until their allowances are paid.
The district chairperson sent the district NRM Caucus chairperson, Swizin Sk Wamala, to seek audience with the councilors over the delayed payment of their allowances because of financial constraints.
Wamala’s explanations could not change the councilors’ determinations to boycott the meeting which had been convened to lay a draft budget for 2022/2023 financial year.
Some councilors who for many hours congregated under Kagadi freedom tree outside the council hall, turned rowdy and attempted to beat up Swizin SK Wamala, for not supporting their move and blocking journalists to cover the protest.
Alice Byaruhanga, the female district councilor for Muhorro sub county accused the district of encroaching on their constitutional right by failing to meet their financial obligations.
The Kagadi district chairperson, Ndibwami B Yosia blamed the ministry of finance for delaying to release the money.
He told our reporter that they have requested for an additional funding worth Shs349million from the ministry of finance to pay political leaders of Kagadi district.
However, asked councilors to be patient till the money will be released.
However, the protest by the majority of councilors, did not stop the district speaker, Magezi Muhonge to conduct council business which was attended by a few members.
Muhonge said it was mandatory to hold the council to lay a draft budget worth Shs 37billion for 2022/2023 financial year in order to avoid future consequences.
