The National Drug Authority (NDA) has handed over to police, a one Robert Mujumbi who claims to have come up with a cure for the Coronavirus Disease (COVID -19). Mujumbi who identified himself as a molecular medicine expert and CEO of Biobert Research Group Limited was arrested on Wednesday.
In his letter to the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health a few weeks ago Mujumbi said he had come up with both COVID and HIV cure was found at his home in Bweyogerere which also acts as a small laboratory.
According to Dr. David Nahamya, the Secretary to the Authority, the arrest came after attempts to have discussions with the ‘researcher’ about his innovations failed.
Mujumbi’s April 10th letter to permanent Secretary Dr. Diana Atwiine has been making rounds on social media where he came up to explain that his cure which is enzyme based selectively digests the genotype of the virus and had already helped some people who had been living with HIV.
But, today when he was asked to explain, he couldn’t show any proof of his work even though he had noted earlier that he was open to discussions or even trial regarding efficacy of his medicine.
When the Police and NDA visited his home in Bweyogerere, all they found were packs of unbranded drugs and a Bunsen burner. Nahamya says he was only using these to deceive people.
According to Nahamya, there are procedures followed in drug development that include clinical trials and that for anyone to do research, they need to be licensed and approved by both the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology and NDA.
Mujumbi neither possesses this certificate nor the basic practicing license required of any medical practitioner by the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners’ Council.
