District leaders through their body, Uganda Local Government Association (ULGA) have urged government to consider allocating additional funding to districts given their essential role in the fight against COVID-19.
The group made their plea during their quarterly meeting held between the Minister of Local Government, Raphael Magyezi and district Chairpersons who informed the him that in the fight against COVID-19, MPs and RDCs were given resources to fight the pandemic but district chairpersons were left out yet they play an important role in mobilisation.
Joseph Lomonyang, Chairperson ULGA said there is need to extend extra support to districts especially those on border posts to help deal with issues of porous borders that may breed influx of Nationals from Coronavirus hit countries, which may endanger lives of Ugandans.
Lomonyang noted that in their request for more funding, district leaders are alive to Uganda’s poor financial status and the group has received information that the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) collections from local governments have reduced from Shs40b to Shs4b
Magyezi appreciated the efforts of chairpersons in the fight against COVID-19 and assured them government is handling the issue of porous borders.
