Poverty eradication: Museveni donates 8 heifers to Mukono Diocese

The Diocese of Mukono has received eight heifers from President Yoweri Museveni under Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) programme to boost its project aimed at eradicating poverty among christians.

The diocese initiated Mukono Socio-Economic Development Programme-MUDI-SEDEP to fight poverty among Christians.

The Mukono diocesan Bishop Rt. Rev. James Ssebaggala said that the animals will be taken to their farm in Nakanyonyi where they will be taken care of.

“The heifers are going to be part of our project at the diocese. Once they multiply we shall give them out to other people in the diocese to eradicate poverty among Christians,” he said.

Rev Ssebaggala appealed to christians to teach their children to embrace agriculture as it’s the backbone of the country.

He noted: “Children tend to have a negative attitude towards agriculture once they grow up as they chance white color jobs. Being rich today requires practicing agriculture, once people don’t practice farming then the economy will not survive.”

The Mukono Residential District Commissioner (RDC) Fred Bamwiine who handed the animals on behalf of the President said that once people engage in agriculture they would not cry out to government for help.

“If people practiced agriculture, they would not be crying for relief food during this time,” he said.

Col. Kiwanuka Richard the head Operation Wealth Creation Mukono noted: “The animals have only been given to Mukono diocese but also other dioceses in Uganda.”

According to the District Production Officer Dr. Fred Mukulu, such consignments wills are only extended to organized groups that can take care of them during this Covid-19 period.

The heifers received are 75 percent dairy and 25 percent local. Recipients are expected to care about them for multiplicity to benefit the community.

“We have given out animals from Operations Wealth Creation. They are of good quality, disease resistant, however, they need good care,” said Mukulu.

“The animals are given to people according to how you can manage taking care of them. 75 percent heifers can not stay without eating for an hour and have the capacity to produce 20-25 liters of milk,” he added.
