Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom Enganda football tournament and bicycle race will kick off on 25 this month at Masindi stadium and end on October 27 at Rukurato Gardens in Hoima City, according to the Kingdom Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS), Mr Alex Katusabe.
During a press briefing at Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom offices in Hoima city on Wednesday, it was revealed that the football competition will be played on clan basis with Mr Katusabe stressing that only clans that have registered will be eligible to actively participate in the tournament.
To ensure transparency, all participants are being registered through their clan chiefs in the tournament that is focussing on promoting culture as a significant icon for one’s identity.
Mr Katusabe, who is also the MTN Enganda Tournament Coordinator for Bunyoro kingdom, said besides promoting one’s health, the events also promote unity among the people of Bunyoro.
The administrator vowed that previous cases of malpractice will not happen again in these competitions citing substitutes in the bicycle race and boda-boda riders’ interruptions evidenced in Kikuube and Masindi districts respectively in last year’s events.
He disclosed that the kingdom and event partner organisers have liaised with the police to ensure the smooth running of the events.
In this season’s competitions, the winner will take home Shs500,000 in the men’s bicycle race while women will take Shs400,000 at district level.
In the final bicycle race, the general winner will take home Shs200,000 in both men and women competitions.
In football, the winner will take a trophy, gold medals and Shs2m while every team that registers will be given a set of jersey for the players.
Mr Katusabe said the kingdom will offer support to some teams that will find it hard to manage transport costs in time.
