Unidentified gunmen have shot dead Benson Otim, a medical worker attached to a project at Moroto Regional Referral Hospital run by JHPIEGO, an international non-profit health organisation affiliated with Johns Hopkins University.
Otim met his death at the hands of the gunmen on Friday evening at Turutuko in Napak district at the border with Abim and Kotido districts.
His death has shocked many including Moroto Regional Referral Hospital staff. Benedicto Watmon, the Director Moroto Regional Referral Hospital, says he was left speechless when he heard news of Otim’s killing.
“Am saddened and I have no words to say at the moment,” said the hospital Director when contacted by our reporter.
Dr. Moses Okwir, who is also attached to Moroto Regional Referral Hospital, said Otim met a painful death. Otim’s body was still lying at Moroto Regional Referral Hospital pending postmortem by the time of publishing this story.
Maj. Peter Mugisa, the UPDF Third Division Spokesman, says they suspect that Otim’s killing was planned. He says they have commenced investigations to establish the motive of the murder.
John Baptist Kyambade, the Operations Commander Napak Central Police Station, says they have commenced joint operations together with UPDF.
Otim hails from Otuke district in Lango sub region. He was heading to his home district when he was gunned down.
