Big swarms of Desert locusts have entered Bulambuli district through the lower belt of Kween.
Locusts invaded Sebei region in Bukwo and Kween on Tuesday evening from Kenya and have now advanced to Bulambuli and Bukedea districts.
They entered Bulambuli district through Ngeng Sub County in Kween district where they have reportedly destroyed fields of crops before settling in Bwikhonge and Nabongo Sub Counties in lower Bulambuli district.
According to officials, big swarms of locusts yesterday invaded Seseti village on Ngenge hills in Ngenge Sub County at about 4:00pm before relocating to Kacharasi and Hatari at the border of Bunambutye, Bwikhonge and Nabongo Sub Counties in Bulambuli district.
In Bukedea district, the locusts have have been sighted in Tajar, and Korir sub counties that are neighboring Bulambuli district.
Bulambuli Resident District Commissioner, Peter Paax Pek told Uganda Radio Network that the locusts invaded two sub counties for a short time before they advanced to Bukedea district which neighbours Bulambuli.
“This morning we received information that locusts had early morning invaded two sub counties and the district rapid response team went to the ground to verify and confirmed the invasion as they covered gardens of Cabbage, rice, Maize,” said Paax.
He added that too much heat in the area is making the locusts to move at high speed making it hard for the UPDF to track them.
Denis Balwanirengha, the Kween District Resident Commissioner said the locusts are looking for a new breeding ground that is why they are moving at a very high speed.
Brigadier General Stephen Oluka, the Head of Disaster Response in the officer of the Prime Minister said locusts have laid a lot of eggs during their stay in different parts of the country that may cause more havoc.

have fought locusts adding that they are now on top of the situation.
