A special police constable attached to Kakumiro Police station has been arrested for shooting dead a student and injuring two people including a police officer during a random shooting scuffle on Saturday evening.
The suspect has been identified as SPC Frank Magezi No.6634 who is currently under detention.
He allegedly shot and killed Simon Asiimwe a son to Alex Gwazo a resident of Kakumiro Town council, Kakumiro district during a scuffle in which he was dispersing a crowd that threatened to lynch a suspected motorcycle thief who was being rushed to Kakumiro police station at around 7:30pm.
The deceased died on spot after two bullets ripped off through his neck and head.
The Albertine Regional Police spokesperson Allan Julius Hakiza says that the suspect also injured a police officer identified as Tadeo Sebulime No.1691 and another yet to be identified person.
Last evening, the Albertine Regional Police Commander Deo Obura and a team of police officers together with Kakumiro District leaders visited the bereaved family which was left in somber mood.
During the meeting, residents demanded RPC Obura to transfer Kakumiro District Police Commander, Najjib Waiswa over poor performance and neglect of duty.
Several mourners protested with placards calling for the DPC’s transfer.
In response, RPC Obura who condemned the act said police’s administration will handle the matters of compensating the deceased’s family.
There was tension as family and friends of the deceased mobilized to attack Kakumiro Police station which is about 80 meters from the spot where the student was gunned down.
UPDF soldiers and Local Defense Unit forces were deployed to avert any possibilities of chaos.
