The death toll from the nasty Luweero accident on Friday has reached twelve people. The accident occurred at Kibisi village along Kampala-Gulu highway around 3pm on Friday when a Kampala bound taxi registration number UBE 364N rammed into a Tipper truck number UG 0209U belonging to Uganda Prison Services claiming the lives of people in both vehicles.
Shortly after the accident, Police said eight people had died and four others escaped with injuries. However, this morning, police increased the death toll 12 people. Nine of the deceased were traveling in the Kampala bound taxi. Police has identified the deceased as Sam Banalyaki, a Prison staff, Jonathan Ngobi, a driver and the turn man of prison truck whose identity hasn’t been established.
The others are Aphrodice Itimana, a Rwanda National, Juma Kisalita, a resident of Kibisi village, Daphine Nakirijja of Kaliro Katono in Luweero district, John Nvunabo from Mityana and Musa Wasige from Bweyogerere. The others are Adam Wamboya of Kiwoko-Nakaseke, Aziz Ssekimuli of Bbaale Kayunga district and Fred Lutaya Junior who was heading to St. Peter’s SS in Luweero to pick his UACE results.
A rider of motor cycle registration number UEW 124R who was following the taxi sustained a broken leg.Abraham Tukundane, the Luweero District Police Commander explains that they have since established that 10 people died on spot while the two others died at Luweero Hospital and Bombo Military Hospital.
Tukundane explains that two survivors have been evacuated from Bombo Military hospital to Mulago National Referral Hospital for further management because of serious injuries. He says the accident was caused by the Prisons Truck, which broken down on the road. Eye witnesses also told URN that some of the parts on the prison truck were tied with ropes.
The families of the bereaved were still flocking the mortuary at Luweero Hospital to pick the bodies of their loved ones by the time of filing this story. On Friday, Police used an electric chain saw to remove bodies from the wreckage of the taxi. The Prison truck broke into two pieces after the nasty accident. The wreckage has since been towed to Bombo Police Station as investigations continue. Accidents are common in Luweero especially along the Kampala-Gulu highway. On February 12, one person died and over 40 escaped with critical injuries in an accident at Kaliro Katono trading center along Wobulenzi-Bamunanika road in Luweero district.
The accident occurred when a Fuso truck registration number UAN 536F destined for Wabitungulu market in Bamunanika Sub County lost control and overturned at Kaliro Katono trading centre. In January this year, a super custom vehicle number UAW 553L rammed into a Gaagaa bus registration number UAU 379R at Luweero town killing two of its occupants on spot.
