President Museveni has vowed to prosecute politicians who report that there is no coronavirus in the country.
Addressing the NRM Delegates Conference on Tuesday, 18 August 2020, the President said it is unfortunate that some people still take the virus for granted even when it is killing Ugandans.
“In Uganda, we have lost a total of 15 people. You remember people were saying this disease isn’t killing people. I hear some politicians saying that there is no Coronavirus. If we get evidence, we shall prosecute them. For four months, nobody died. People said the scientists are locking us down to make money. Well, on July 21st, we had the first death,” he said.
Mr Museveni insisted that whereas people have lost business and jobs due to the COVID-19 induced lockdown, it is important to protect lives first.
“Everybody should know that we have no alternative. We shouldn’t be shortsighted to think about jobs, businesses and forget life,” he said.
Uganda has so far registered 1,603 COVID-19 cases, with the community cases on the rise, especially in Kampala.
Nevertheless, the President said he remains upbeat with the high number of recoveries.
“The number of people who have survived the virus (#COVID19) in Uganda gives me hope for a vaccine. The good thing about Coronavirus is that if people are well taken care of, they can survive and eliminate it completely from their bodies. This makes it less dangerous than AIDS in my view, but it also kills on a large scale,” he added.
