Veterans from the Home Guard Reserve Forces in Greater Kibaale have expressed disappointment over unfulfilled promises made by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in recognition of their efforts in combating the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels.
The ADF, an Islamist rebel group operating in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, posed significant threats to the region during the late 1990s.
The Greater Kibaale area includes Kibaale, Kakumiro, and Kagadi districts.
In an interview with our reporter this evening, Home Guard Commander Stephen Tulyagyenda led the charge in voicing their frustrations, noting that President Museveni has repeatedly pledged to provide iron sheets and gratuity for their service in driving ADF rebels from the region between 1998 and 2001.
He called on leaders at all levels to assist in reaching out to the President during his upcoming visit to Kikwaaya playground in Kikwaaya town council, Kakumiro district on 15th November 2024.
During this visit, President Museveni is expected to officially launch a four-acre model program for the Greater Kibaale and Kikuube districts.
Other members of the Home Guard Reserve Forces who included Ahebwa Ruhabya and Christopher Kabagambe echoed their concerns over perceived neglect by the government.
They emphasised the critical roles they played during the conflict.
Some recounted near-death experiences while defending Ugandans against ADF attacks that resulted in numerous fatalities.
