Residents of Greater Kibaale District are in mourning following the sudden death of former district chairman, George William Namyaka.
Namyaka, who was known for his long-standing public service and leadership, passed away at his home in Kitemuzi Cell, Mabaale Town Council, Kagadi District, earlier this morning.
The cause of death is linked to an undisclosed illness that Namyaka had been battling in recent months.
His passing has sent shockwaves through the community, where he was a well-respected figure both as a leader and a mentor.
Namyaka served as chairman of Greater Kibaale District from 2002 to 2016.
His path to the district’s top position followed a contentious election process in the wake of the 2001 general elections.
On April 26, 2002, he was nominated as a compromise candidate in a meeting at the district headquarters.
He was officially sworn in on July 25th, 2002, after a highly contested election that involved Fred Rulemera.
Before his political career, Namyaka was a respected educator, serving as headteacher at both Naigana and Duhaga Senior Secondary Schools.
He also held the role of Chairman of the District Service Commission for Kibaale, further cementing his reputation as a dedicated public servant.
Namyaka served three terms as district chairman, retiring in 2016.
His leadership was marked by a focus on peace-building and fostering unity in the region.
The Kagadi District Woman Member of Parliament Janepher Kyomuhendo Mbabazi has paid tribute to the late Namyaka, describing him as a “champion of peace.”
MP Mbabazi praised his leadership during a time of political and social tensions, adding that his passing marks a significant loss for both Kagadi and the greater Kibaale community.
Ndibwami B. Yosia, the current Kagadi District Chairman, also eulogized Namyaka, calling him an exemplary leader who played a crucial role in resolving tribal conflicts between the Bafuruki and Banyoro communities during his term.
The Kagadi Town Council L.C.3 Chairman Geofrey Businge described the late Namyaka as an “compendium” of local history and governance.
He emphasized his contributions to the district’s development.
Yusufu Ruben, a close family friend, remembered Namyaka as both a mentor and a “caring parent.
He noted that he had always been a source of wisdom and guidance.

The family of George William Namyaka has confirmed that his funeral will take place on Tuesday, November 19th, 2024.
According to the tentative arrangements, the Kagadi District Council will honor the late chairman with an extraordinary sitting at the district headquarters at 9 a.m.
At 11 a.m., the body will be transported to his ancestral home in Kitemuzi, Mabaale.
A series of tributes, including speeches and a church service, will precede the burial at 2 p.m.
