Students of Islamic University in Uganda-IUIU will complete the remaining lessons of this semester online following the president’s directive closing all institutions of learning because of the corona virus threat.
In a memo issued to students during their congress on Thursday, Dr. Abdul Kaziba Mpaata, the Vice Rector In charge of Finance and Administration at IUIU, said students will be released this Friday and will receive their remaining lectures for this semester online.
He said following the presidential directive, the Executive Board of the university sat this morning and resolved that all students immediately provide details of their online contacts to their respective Deans and Heads of departments who will avail them to their lecturers to send notes and other reading materials on line.
He therefore advised Staff and students to utilize the University online system and other learning platforms to deliver the remaining course content. The Memo also stresses that unless communicated otherwise by government, students will be expected to report back on April 19th, 2020 to prepare for their exams, which will begin on April 27th, 2020 as earlier planned.
The board also resolved that International students arrange with their coordinator, Alhaji Abubakar Ndaji to process their travel documents and that those who would wish to stay should register with the university coordinator’s office.
“International Students who would wish to stay at campus should, however register with the university coordinator’s office and be ready to stay within the campus to avoid contact with outside people and also observe the university rules and regulation,” the memo further reads.
Other campuses with students on quarter system have also been asked to suspend exams that have been ongoing and only continue with them when the students return and that the Friday congregational prayer will also be conducted online.
Dr. Mpaata asked students to utilise the time while at home to read their books and clear their school dues to zero balance.
He noted that the university will remain open and lecturers will remain to prepare examinations and serve new students who want to get admission.
Dr. Halima Akbar, the University Academic Registrar told the students that the decision to send them home is aimed at mitigating the effects of the corona virus pandemic.
Akram Kankade, a First Year student of Arts in Education welcomed the move by the university to give the students learning content so as to keep them busy.
Kulailo Nyango, a student of Arts in Education, said he expected this from the university management. He however expressed concern on how they will study practical courses online, which he said is almost impossible.
Hasifa Chelimo, a third year student of Business Studies said they will not have enough time to read their books and that the university should have at least extended the period of exams for at least one month instead of the two weeks communicated.
