Thousands of Christians have gathered at wii-gweng village, Mucwini Sub County in Kitgum district to mark the 43rd-anniversary commemoration of the martyrdom of Archbishop St Janani Luwum.
The memorial service begun with prayers at 10:00 a.m. and was led by the outgoing Church of Uganda Archbishop, the most Stanley Ntagali. This year’s celebration is marked under the theme “Let us not get tired of doing good” drawn from Galatians 6-9.
In his homily, Archbishop Ntagali described Luwum as a great servant of God who served unconditionally. He says Luwum was obedient and followed the teachings of Jesus Christ closely adding that he will be greatly remembered for his good deeds.
He also notes that Luwum served in the church with little attention to money unlike currently were many preachers have Commercial gospel preaching and church work.
In attendance at the commemoration are several government dignitaries led by the Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda who has represented President Museveni.
Archbishop Luwum was murdered on February 16th 1977 at Nakasero by former Uganda president Idi Amin over his criticism of the former dictator’s excesses. his body was buried at their ancestral home in Wii-Gweng village in Mucwini Sub-County.
