A Strange disease has attacked pigs in Busia district, killing about 250 of them in a space of one month.
Many of the animals are dying within 24 hours after showing signs of failure to breath and high temperature. The cases have been reported in the areas of Lunyo, Busime, Lumino, Buhehe, Masaba, and Busitema.
Steven Wafula, a pig farmer says that he has lost 6 pigs within the last two weeks and he could not establish the cause of death.
Busia District Veterinary Officer Dr Patrick Barasa says that initial samples which were taken to Entebbe and tested negative to swine fever. Additional samples have now been taken to Makerere University to determine the cause of the deaths.
Dr Barasa noted that they have intensified operations to close all pork joints and have restricted the movement of pigs in the district.
Jackson Kato, a pork joint dealer in Busia town called for urgent intervention to contain the disease, saying that several businesses are now paralyzed.
