Bus companies are now involved in cargo transportation to keep afloat following the presidential ban on public transportation.
On Wednesday last week, President, Yoweri Museveni banned public transport with the exception of cargo trucks as part of the preventive measures against the spread of COVID19.
The ban prompted all bus and taxi operators to suspend transporting passengers making their fleets idle. However, all isn’t lost for bus companies, which have found solace in transporting cargo.
Patrick Mwesigwa is the manager in charge of luggage in Global Bus Company, which owns a fleet of over 86 buses that have been plying the western route.
He says following the ban on public transport, they are now focusing on Cargo to keep the company moving.
He says they are currently involved in transporting food stuffs and other things that people need to continue surviving.
Moses Godfrey Kaita, an employee of YY Coaches and Courier Services also says they are currently moving cargo.
He however, says they still face a challenge of how to deliver the goods to their recipients since people no longer trust Boda boda riders to deliver.
He also says currently, only the people working in the cargo section are receiving pay and transported to the park.
Other companies providing cargo transport services include Transport, Logistics and Baby coach bus Company among others.
