Kagadi
In a remarkable display of community spirit, residents of Pacwa Town Council in Kagadi district, under their association Pachwa Linda Ebyobuhangwa have come together to restore the depleted Rwengeye forest reserve through collaborative forest management. Led by Chairperson Michael Rwasemereza of the Community Forest Management (CFM), the initiative has seen the community partner with the National Forest Authority (NFA) to revive the once-thriving forest.
“The community’s efforts have not only revitalized the forest ecosystem but also fostered a sense of ownership and responsibility among residents,” Rwasemereza said. “We’ve witnessed a significant increase in tree cover, and the forest is now teeming with wildlife and medicinal plants.”
Through their collective efforts, the residents of Pacwa Town Council have demonstrated the power of collaboration in achieving sustainable forest management and improving their overall well-being. The restoration of Rwengeye forest reserve has provided the community with a steady supply of firewood, medicinal plants, and fresh air.
“Before the restoration, we had to travel long distances to find firewood and medicinal plants,” said resident Jane Kabagyenyi. “Now, we have everything we need right here in our community.”
Rwasemereza emphasized that the community’s sense of ownership and responsibility has been key to the initiative’s success. “We’ve taken ownership of our forest, and we’re determined to protect it for future generations,” he said.
The partnership with NFA has also provided the community with technical support and training on sustainable forest management practices. “We’ve learned how to plant trees, manage the forest, and conserve the environment,” said Rwasemereza.
The restoration of Rwengeye forest reserve serves as a model for community-led conservation efforts in Uganda. The success of this initiative is a testament to the power of collaboration and community spirit in achieving sustainable development and environmental protection
