At least two people have been killed and several others severely injured over a land dispute involving family members in Aloc ‘A’ Village, Odoro Parish in Aromo Sub- County in Lira District.
The dead have been identified as 41-old Ketty Akwero and her 2-year old daughter, Dolly Akullo. The two met their death on Friday night. It is alleged that Akwero was killed by her maternal uncles following a dispute over a piece of land she inherited from her late maternal grandmother.
The assailants also killed Akwero’s daughter who was sleeping in a grass thatched hut. When the news of her death reached her partnel relatives, they mobilised and stormed Aloc ‘A’ Village where they torched two grass thatched houses and several other permanent houses using petrol.
Yubentino Owiny, an elderly resident who witnessed the nasty incident, says the deceased’s relatives couldn’t control their anger.
Eriya Kategaya, the eldest son to the deceased, who is a soldier attached to the 4th Division recalls having received a phone call from his brother asking him to call back only to realise that they were caught in a life and death situation.
He says they had for long tried to resolve the matter in vain. He blames the local leaders and police for the loss of his mother.
Milton Odongo, the Lira Resident District Commissioner who visited the scene condemned the incident, saying the situation is now calm following security intervention.
He explained that security is searching for the perpetrators of the murder so that they can face the law.
He also cautioned clan leaders against taking sides when solving conflicts and advised them to intervene in land conflicts before they turn bloody.
