Two suspected criminals were shot dead by Local Defense Unit- LDU and Field Force Unit –FFU personnel in the wee hours of Tuesday morning for alleged burglary in Kazo Central zone, in Kawempe Division in Kampala.
The LDUs gunned down Simon Sserwadda, who alongside three others allegedly raided a shop belonging to one of the residents of Kazo around 4am. According to UPDF First Division Spokesperson, Major Bilal Katamba, residents alerted LDUs who were on foot patrol about the raid.
Maj. Katamba said LDUs found the group vacating the scene with their loot but they decided to take off when they saw them approaching. He explains that the LDUs first fired in the air in order to scare the suspect to stop but they continued running protecting them to shoot Sserwadda.
Although Sserwadda was shot and killed, his colleagues disappeared with some of items including food stuff, TV screen and unspecified amount of money. Katamba said locals have since identified Sserwadda as one of criminals who has been terrorising their area.
Similarly, another suspected thug was killed during the raid on the home of Prof Vincent Ssembatya, a resident of Upper Kololo. The thug was seen by police officers manning the Kololo Closed Circuit Television –CCTV control room.
The officers rushed to Prof Ssembatya’s home and asked the suspected thug to surrender in vain.
Over the weekend, LDUs killed a suspected criminal along the Entebbe Expressway in the wee hours of Saturday morning. LDU didn’t have details of the suspect who was allegedly found cutting the wire mesh along Entebbe expressway around 3am.
Last week, LDUs shot and killed two police officers in a foiled robbery at Nankinga zone, Bunamwaya, Makindye Ssabagabo Municipality, in Wakiso District. UPDF identified the deceased as Ambrose Byareta and Fred Turyomunsi.
UPDF said Byareta was wearing an army uniform with a rank of sergeant though he was a Police Constable while Turyomunsi was working in the police armory at police headquarters.
