The four UPDF officers who have been in custody on accusations of shooting dead a man in Kyabugimbi sub county, Bushenyi district, will appear before the court martial next week, the army leadership has said.
Lt Cpl Aleny Joseph, Pte Oryem Albert, Pte Muhumuza Stephen, Pte Kwesiga Brown, and Ojala Peter, a member of G4 private Security firm, who were deployed to guard a stone quarry, illegally moved to enforce a curfew in Mukacence trading centre on May 10, 2020, leading to the shooting dead of Vincent Tumuhirwe, and extorting from residents. The soldiers also allegedly raped a woman.
According to Lt.Col. Deo Akiiki, the UPDF deputy spokesperson, said that the accused will face the army Division court martial in Mbarara.
“The UPDF fraternity condemns this act of lawlessness on the part of the individual personnel involved and commiserates with the family of Tumuheirwe Vincent,” he said.
Akiiki assured that the institution will ensure justice is served adding that UPDF would like to also make it categorically clear that no members of the construction Company (MOTA ENGIL- AFRICA) was involved in this scuffle but rather members of the security who were deployed at the site.
