Police Launch Investigations into Mob Killing of Two Suspected Thieves in Kagadi

Police in Kagadi District have opened investigations following the brutal killing of two men, Kato David, 26, and Benon, 28, by an angry mob.

The incident occurred on 7th March 2026 at Twerire Trading Centre in Galiboleka Sub County.

According to SP Julius Allan Hakiza, the Albertine South Police Public Relations Officer, the victims were beaten to death after they were caught breaking into a drug shop at around 4 a.m.

Kagadi Police visited the scene immediately, documented the events, and conducted a postmortem before handing the bodies over to the families for burial arrangements.

SP Hakiza also warned the public against taking the law into their own hands.

He urged residents to report suspected criminals to authorities so that they can face legal action rather than resorting to mob justice.

Residents reported that the suspects were attacked after being caught in the act at Twerire Trading Centre, Bugarama Parish, Garibileke Sub-county.

The two men were later buried on Sunday—Kato David at his parents’ home in Twerire Village, and Benon Tumusiime at his relatives’ home in Mukasojo Village.

Fred Katarikuka, Chairperson of Bugarama A, noted that Benon had been living in Kagadi Town Council after being chased from his home area and was long suspected of theft. “The community had been wary of him, but mob justice is never the solution,” he added.

A relative of the deceased, Katusabe Adela, explained that Benon reportedly started stealing at a young age after moving from Kabuga in Muhooro Sub-county, highlighting the complex social issues underlying the incident.

Vito Turyakira, the GISO of Garibileke Sub-county, confirmed that he alerted police after learning the residents had already attacked the suspects.

He strongly condemned the mob action and stressed that security agencies are investigating the matter, warning that those involved could face legal consequences.
