Security Guard Shoots Youth Dead in Kakira Town Council

Police in Kakira town council are investigating circumstances under which a security guard attached to industrial security services limited shot dead a youth on Sunday night.

The 28-year old Batista Atayo, a resident of Nailo village in Kakira town council, Jinja district was shot dead by a security guard whose names have not yet been established. Industrial security services limited are responsible with ensuring security in Kakira sugar works plantations.

Police officers attached to Kakira police division have since registered a case of murder under CRB/038/2020 and the hunt for the suspect is ongoing.

A postmortem report seen by URN indicates that the bullet passed through the deceased’s upper ribs and went out through the upper part of the abdomen. It further states that both the kidney and heart were raptured.

The yet to be identified guard reportedly teamed up with his other colleagues and they dumped the deceased at the Jinja regional referral mortuary without informing the hospital security.

A health worker who spoke on condition of anonymity says that he tried to stop the guards from accessing the mortuary in absence of police officers. “I was standing outside the ward when these guards brought the dead body. I questioned why they didn’t have any police documentation but they instead pushed me aside and dumped the deceased on the floor before driving away in a white pickup vehicle,” added the health worker.

Robert Embati, the deceased’s brother says that he received a call informing him of his brother’s death. “It was last night when someone who only identified himself as one of the employees attached to industrial security services limited headquarters informed me that my brother was shot dead while stealing metallic scrap,” he says.

Embati admitted that his late brother was a renowned scrap dealer in Kakira town, but added that he is not sure why security shot him dead.

Diana Nandawula, the Kiira region police spokesperson confirms the incident but refused to divulge into details. She only said investigations are on-going.
